The Breckenridge lift-ticket tax and parking in Breckenridge

We created this page to help our guests better understand the 4.5% lift ticket tax applied to single and multi-day Breckenridge lift tickets.

Last summer, the Town of Breckenridge campaigned to build a new parking garage in the town core, along with transit improvements, to be funded by the lift tax proceeds. In November of 2015, the citizens of Breckenridge passed the tax. While we were successful in getting the Town to exclude season passes from the tax, the 4.5% tax will be paid by any purchaser of Breckenridge lift tickets, including anyone using their Buddy Pass or Ski-with-a-Friend tickets at Breckenridge.

Despite the tax now being collected from our skiing and snowboarding guests, the Town has yet to produce any plans for a parking garage.

Before the measure went on the ballot we expressed our concern about the tax and our uncertainty that the Town was fully prepared to move forward with a new parking facility. But we accepted the Town’s campaign commitment of demanding “Parking Now,” as we did agree that parking is a serious issue in Breckenridge and new skier parking is necessary.

We were expecting that this new skier parking would have been well into the design phase by now. Unfortunately, after the tax passed, the Town backed away from these plans and it is not clear when or where the Town will ever construct new skier parking. Please let us know your thoughts by email to breckfeedback@vailresorts.com and we will forward them to the Town or you can contact the Town directly at websiteadmin@townofbreckenridge.com

Breckenridge town council rebuts claim it reneged on parking garage promise

“In meeting after meeting, both in public and in private, we agreed with council that parking is a priority issue and has to be addressed. And we took council at their word when they promised us and our guests, the skiers and snowboarders who will be paying the tax, that an immediate parking facility in the town core was a major part of the plan that they very publicly declared had been ‘studied to death,’” said Buhler.

“A bait and switch by Breckenridge on voter-approved parking plan”; by John Buhler

"As proud Colorado corporate citizens, Vail Resorts is committed to supporting reasonable, responsible measures that do the right thing for our state, our company, our guests, our employees and our mountain communities. We have a duty to work with our community partners to find common-ground political solutions that serve the interests of every stakeholder.  But we also have a responsibility to hold our partners — especially government leadership — accountable when they fail to uphold the campaign promises they make."

"Town of Breckenridge, Breckenridge Ski Resort at odds over funding parking, transit improvements

“The town council is convinced the town needs a lift-ticket admissions tax to fund construction and maintenance of a new parking garage at the F-Lot at the south end of town as well as increased transit services.”

Breckenridge, Vail battling over proposed lift-ticket tax”

“Breckenridge for several months has been working a plan to ease congestion in the historic town. The plan calls for a 900-space, partially buried parking garage in the town core.”

"Vail Resorts, Breckenridge reach agreement on lift ticket tax"

“Parking and transit are real issues for the Breckenridge community, and we are pleased to have an agreement that provides the town the funding required to address these needs,” said John Buhler, chief operating officer of Breckenridge Ski Resort, in a statement early Wednesday. “We have concerns regarding any tax increase, but reaching these terms protects the greatest number of Breckenridge guests.”
