Ski with a Ranger

Ski With a Ranger is an opportunity for the United States Forest Service, Friends of Dillon Ranger District, and Breckenridge Ski Resort to partner and provide guided interpretive tours for the purpose of highlighting the resources of the National Forest and the resort’s environmental commitments.

Volunteer Rangers guide a 1 hour ski or snowboard tour down an intermediate trail on Peak 7 at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Participants meet in the Peak 7 base area on the plaza between the Peak 7 terminal of the BreckConnect Gondola and the Independence SuperChair at 11:00 a.m. on Fridays from December 16, 2011 through March 30, 2012 (look for a sign indicating the meeting place). The Ski With a Ranger tour is free to participants, but a lift ticket and at least intermediate skiing or snowboarding ability are required. Each tour follows the naturalist guide through several planned stops on the mountain to learn about topics of interest, including:

• Local Wildlife
• Lifecycle of the Mountain Pine Beetle
• Tree Types and Identification
• Avalanche Awareness
• Local History
• Resort Environmental Programs

Examples of what participants learn include:
• Timberline is not at a set elevation but rather depends on the environmental conditions in a given location.
• Aspen trees can reproduce by sending out roots to become new trees and are considered among the largest organisms on Earth.
• Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Town of Breckenridge partnered to preserve Cucumber Gulch open space, a wetland open space area just downhill from the Peaks 7 and 8 base areas.

Hours: 11:00am, Fridays
Dates Of Operation: December 16, 2011 - March 30, 2012
